Housing Needs
Occupational Therapists have the necessary skills to support people needing alterations to their current property or a new one they plan to purchase. Our collaborative approach involves assessing each individual’s unique needs, considering medical diagnoses and prognosis. We evaluate both short-term and long-term requirements through a comprehensive needs assessment. Each person’s unique set of wishes and values are incorporated into our recommendations. We include the client and their family in discussions about property purchase and/or alterations, advocating for them as required. Additionally, we work with architects and builders to ensure every aspect of property adaptation is handled by the most appropriate professionals.
Examples of How We Can Help
Access Visits
We can view properties before a purchase to advise on their potential suitability. If necessary, we liaise with an architect for a technical overview. After the property viewing, we complete a report with recommendations. We can also view multiple properties and provide a comparison within the report.
Property Search
We search the market for potential suitable properties that meet given criteria. Most properties for sale have floor plans that we can review to consider the layout and potential alterations needed to meet specific needs. We liaise with architects for technical overviews and structural engineers for estimated adaptation costs if required. Additionally, we can estimate costs for large items of equipment, such as ceiling track hoists or specialist bathing equipment, by consulting industry colleagues.
Architectural Plans
If you have architectural plans for potential home alterations, we can review them and provide a commentary report from a functional and practical perspective, considering individual medical needs. We can also collaborate with the architect during the plan-drawing phase.
Purchase and Rental Support
We offer support and advice on properties being bought or rented. It should be noted that more restrictions apply to adapting rental properties. Before viewing a property or plans, the Occupational Therapist must complete a comprehensive assessment of need. This ensures that recommendations are based on current information, abilities, and desires.
